Well, this isn't technically "canonical", but it was close to the word "conical" that is in the title to this image, so I went with it. In any event what we are seeing here is classic exemplar of a large hill with exposed strata. The image appears in the Reports of Explorations and Surveys...to ascertain...the Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, a massive 13-volume work that is more commonly referred to as the USPRR. The chromolithograph appears in volume III of the work, and was published in 1856. The accompanying text explains the image.
