It seems to me as though I've encountered other very unflattering introductions of the less-privileged to new inventions like the telephone along the lines of the following racist/Imperialist story. It isn't very pretty, but it is worth reading to see the extent to which denominating certain people to the vast under-under class played out even in the introduction of new technologies. This appears in Scientific American, 14 February 1880, p 98.
