Here we go: I found this fascinating little table in the article "Diet in England and France" in the Journal of the Franklin Institute for July, 1828. I think that the table displays what seems to be common knowledge about consumption in the two cultures, though it also provides some interesting numbers ("compiled from authentic documents") to back everything up. The first section displays gross numbers, while the second breaks it down to consumption in terms of per capita. The Brits drink far less wine than the French, though the French drink even less (by an order of magnitude) of tea than the Brits.
