Here's an unexpected bit that turned up in a 1932 issue of Popular Mechanics: a remarkable illustration showing formations of aircraft of the U.S. Army Air Corps. (And, just a short note before the money shot: it was the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1926-1941, the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941-1947 (during which in 1944 the USAAF was composed of 80,000 aircraft and 2.4 million airmen), and the U.S. Air Force (since September 1947).
