Consolidated Gas Company storage facility being constructed in Manhattan, on Ave C between 15th+16th, as it appeared in Scientific American, 27 October 1888. It is a striking structure. Consolidated Gas (formed from six companies in 1884 and which would become Con Ed in 1936) built this mega bruiser: the facility was 192' in diameter and 150' tall, the "barrel" made of double applications of 7/8" wrought iron plate which would accommodate 3.2 million cubic feet of gas. Big.
