This image was one of the promises to the readers of the Eruditorum Poenitentiale (printed in Paris by Antoine Cailhaut in 1487), a book of penitence, a manual for seeking forgiveness and avoiding sin, showing what end awaited those who would disappoint the Creator. The work was a devotional of frailty, a register of sin, an insistent call to the things that could and will go wrong throughout the course of a human life, and what the costs of those shortcomings would be.
