Maxim,  Hiram.  Science in the MAgazines.  London:  Nature,  1894.  1st edition.  : Nature a Weekly Illustrated Journal of Science, 13 September,  Pp 489  8vo.  Printed wrappers.  Good or better condition.  . In the original printed wrappers, the whole removed from a larger bound volume, with the Smithsonian Library’s rubberstamp on the front wrapper. Good. This is a report on the Maxim flying machine as it appeared in the National and reported for the first time in Nature. This is one of the earliest near-completions of powered flight, and gained the attention of only two paragraphs in the premier professional/popular science journal of the world. In 1889 Hiram Maxim (best known for his machine gun) took out British patent no. 16883 for a welded tubular steel construction biplane with a remarkably efficient design of steam boiler. In 1892 and 1893 many trials were made on a test track. On July 31st 1894 Maxim's machine lifted a total weight of 8,000lb into the air for a total flight of some 600ft. The first part of this flight was not free, as the machine was restrained by a set of upper guard rails designed to restrict height to two feet - but these rails eventually broke, and the last part of this flight was free and unrestrained. The machine incurred substantial damage, and Maxim was unable to secure sufficient financial backing to continue.   (Book ID 21546) $650.00

Pegoud in his Bleriot "formed an unconscious prelude to the necessqry manoeuvers of wartime flying" (in Gibbs-SMith "Aviation, p. 166)by flying upside down. This is the first mention of the exploit in English. PEgoud also made the first parachute jump from an aeroplane 19 August 1913.   (Book ID 21343) $300.00

Offered with: the typed veesion of the above, with some corrections, dated April 8, 1946. This is an extremely early American effort at a systems-level analysis of a working jet engine. Hans J. Reissner was a leading German pioneer in aeronautics and aeronautical engineering. He was appointed to the chair vacated by Arnold Sommerfeld at the Technische Hochschul at Aachen, where he established the aerodynamics laboratory. He also designed the great experimental wind tunnel at Aachen and was its second director (after T. von Karman). He went on to the University of Berlin where he remained until 1938, when he left Germany for the United States. Reissner held a chair at the Illinois Institute of Technology and in 1944 joined the faculty at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He became a U.S. citizen in 1944. Van Karman spoke very highly of Reissner and attributed his work in aerodynamics to be as important as those advances made by Prandtl (see von Karman’s Wind and Beyond). Reissner was also celebrated with two anniversary volumes of Applied Mechanics for his 60th and 75th birthdays (in 1934 and 1949). Another development of his was the famous 'Reissner Ente' (duck) with a canard configuration.It took off in 1912. All of Reissner's aircraft were made of metal. Although Reissner left Aachen in 1913, he can be regarded as the founder of the Aerodynamisches Institut in Aachen whose history dates back to 1912." Eric Reissner wrote a biography of his father, describing his professional life but also some personal details. (PDF) Eric Reissner also had a distinguished career as a professor in the areas of applied mathematics and mechanical engineering, with particular focus on the theory of elasticity of thin shells. A biography of Eric Reissner is provided by the University of California at San Diego [UCSD]. Hans Reissner's professional papers are in the Mandeville Special Collections Library of UCSD . The UCSD collection also includes a short professional biography. At Brown University in 1942, he taught a summer course in the Theory of Propellers (PDF), which is included here as an example of his didactic writing. Your grandfather was mentioned there, even with a photo. He was the owner of a "Schuppen" ( a hangar...) number 7. They wrote: He built a biplane at the university of Aachen 1909. He was able to do short flights with it in april 1909. After that, he built a "Wellblechente". [Corrugated sheet duck, referring to the serrated wing profile. -ed] The wings were produced by Prof. Junkers. The airplane was flown by Robert Gsell, a pilot from Switzerland. This airplane left Johannistal airport 1912. In 1913 there was boom in airplane production. A lot of companies began. That's why the ministry of defense of germany published a statement that the army will be pretty much the only organisation in the future which will buy airplanes. The army wanted to deal only with big, powerful companies. That's why a lot of small companies closed, even if they had done a lot for the development of flying in the past. Within a few months, until spring 1913, more than 7 small companies closed. "Prof. Dr. Reißner, Konstrukteur" is here also mentioned. It is interesting to see that his principle is still very modern and in use (see DELTA DART, Cozy Mark 4 or other designs by Rutan, the engineer who built this space airplane which was in the media few days ago....) Reissner's name is also well known for his theoretical work on problems relating to general relativity. Constituted as 413th Fighter Group on 5 Oct 1944 and activated on 15 Oct. Trained for very-long-range operations with P-47'sMoved to the Asiatic- Pacific Theater, Apr-Jun 1945. Assigned to Twentieth AF; reassigned to the Eighth early in Aug 1945. Flew a few strafing missions from Saipan to the Truk Islands in May before beginning operations from Le Shima in Jun. Engaged in dive-bombing and strafing attacks on factories, radar stations, airfields, small ships, and other targets in Japan. Made several attacks on shipping and airfields in China during Jul. Flew its only escort mission on 8 Aug 1945 when it covered B29's during a raid against Yawata, Japan. Served as a part of the air defense and occupation force for the Ryukyu Islands after the war. This is a good, solid (if not beautiful) working copy of this standard and early history of flight. It is fully illustrated with many standard and many unusual images. It is in the original decorated cloth binding but has seen repairs here and there and is housed in a cloth slipcase in a durable cloth box.+++ Good reading copy of a great and early classic. Very heavily illustrated. This copy is from the Brooklyn Public Library, with their markings. There is a rudimentary but working heavy cloth tape repair to the spine. The volume lacks free flyleaves, and the joints are starting. The whole is house in a library-made slipcase. The front cover, which is pretty elaborate and stamped in gilt, is quite nice.
